Family Support

At Notton we offer family support on a one to one basis, helping parents and carers to support themselves and their child whilst at Notton. Within these sessions families are sign posted to external agencies such as our primary mental health worker, ADHD nurse, and parenting courses, such as Parent Plus Adolescence Programme.

Some of the ways that our family support worker can help you to support your family;

  • Getting to know and connecting with your teenager
  • Communicating positively and effectively
  • Building your teenager’s self-esteem and confidence
  • Negotiating rules and boundaries
  • Teaching teenagers responsibility
  • Positive discipline for teenagers
  • Managing conflict
  • Solving problems together

We also hold termly coffee mornings for parents, this is a chance for families to get together to share and learn. Each coffee morning is themed and relevant to their son’s needs. A popular event that has developed and is now headed up by the parents who take turns of agreeing and deciding what they would like to learn and talk about. A recent session included discussions regarding their son’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

The parents and carers that regularly attend coffee mornings have now set up their own group so that they can support and keep in touch outside of the coffee mornings. They are always happy to welcome new members and offer support.

Additionally, we run regular themed wellbeing events and education packages for parents and carers. Our latest initiative will be for parents to attend Rocksteady Training in Bristol to learn DIY skills such as tiling and plastering and obtain a Level 1 accreditation.
