Science

Science is exciting. It is a way to find out what’s in the universe and how those things work. We aim to make Science as practical as possible, to ignite curiosity and open up a world of discovery.

We aim to make Science stimulating, fun and accessible. We advocate a “hands on” investigative approach and the opportunity to take part in a practical curriculum.  A high practical and problem solving approach ensures that pupils discover ideas for themselves. We are also branching out to cover GCSE astronomy in Year 10. See the link in the blue box on the right.

Science is about more than developing understanding of key scientific concepts, it is about encouraging imagination, creativity and curiosity and nurturing key scientific skills to form a firm base for learning.

In both KS2 and 3, students follow a bespoke programme based on the 10 Big Ideas in Science. This approach provides maximum flexibility to staff to engage their students with areas of science they find interesting, whilst also being designed to ensure the best preparation for the new Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Science, or Entry Level Courses. As Science at KS4 is optional, we have continued to be very flexible with students’ individual interests and in the past have offered GCSE Physics and Astronomy to match individual strengths and interests.

Students are taught skills to enable them to become better at thinking scientifically by using models to explain scientific processes; recognising the applications and implications of science and how those aspects of science can affect individuals, society and the world; communicating and collaborating better by using scientific language; using investigative skills to collect evidence by experimenting, and working critically with that evidence.

The Exploring Science Course covers all the content from the 2014 Key Stage 3 Science National Curriculum in 2 years, each year is divided into 12 units. And each unit is divided into 5 topics.

In KS4 students study for the Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Combined Science alongside the Entry Level Certificate. The Entry Level Certificates in Science are specifically designed to closely match the programme of study and provide a progression route to GCSE Combined Science for lower attainers. The certificates support advancement in science by cementing core understanding and maximising engagement with the subject.

Facilities

At Notton House School we have a purpose built, Science laboratory. We are equipped with a good range of Science apparatus to facilitate practicals and investigations.
